E-commerce platform or custom e-commerce software

A hosted e-commerce platform opens fast and leaves the technical work to the provider, but ties you to its rules and its monthly fee. Custom e-commerce software is built around your workflow and the code is yours, but it takes more work up front. The choice depends on how well your way of selling fits a standard template.

Should you use an e-commerce platform or custom e-commerce software?

If your way of selling is standard, a hosted platform is the better choice. If your workflow does not fit a template, custom e-commerce software is. By standard we mean selling a set of products at the same price to everyone, taking card payments and shipping by courier.

A hosted platform is an e-commerce system you rent from a provider. You pay a monthly or yearly fee, and the provider handles servers, security and updates. Custom e-commerce software is written for you, runs on your server and its code belongs to you.

The table below sums up the difference.

Hosted e-commerce platform and custom e-commerce software compared
Hosted platform Custom e-commerce software
Time to launch Short Longer, depends on scope
Cost structure Low start, ongoing subscription Higher start, then hosting and optional maintenance
Technical responsibility With the provider With you or your maintenance team
Flexibility As far as the provider's features and apps allow Built around your workflow
Integrations Limited to ready-made connectors Connects directly to the systems you need
Data and code ownership Data can be exported, code belongs to the provider Data and code are yours
Leaving Moving to another system takes effort If you hold the repository, another team can continue
Best for New stores with standard sales Custom pricing, dealers, production or complex integrations

When is a hosted e-commerce platform enough?

A hosted platform is usually enough for a new store that sells in a standard way. You add products, switch on payment and shipping options and start selling within a short time.

  • Your product range and variants are standard.
  • Every customer pays the same price.
  • The accounting and shipping connectors you need are on the provider's list.
  • You have no technical team and do not want one.

In that case, building custom software means investing heavily in a business model that has not been proven yet. It makes sense to confirm that sales work first.

When do you need custom e-commerce software?

You need custom e-commerce software when the way you sell does not fit the platform's template. The most common cases are dealer pricing, made-to-order production, complex campaign rules and tight links to internal systems.

  • Dealer and wholesale sales: different prices, payment terms or minimum orders per customer.
  • Made-to-order products: prices calculated from the options a customer picks.
  • Links to internal systems: live data exchange with stock, production or a CRM.
  • Multichannel sales: one stock pool across the website, physical stores and marketplaces. Our marketplace integration guide explains how stock and orders are synced.

On a platform, these needs are patched with apps and manual work. Past a certain point, maintaining those apps costs more than custom software would.

There is one more sign: your team doing the same task by hand every day. Copying orders from one sheet to another, matching stock at the end of the day or issuing invoices one by one shows that the system does not fit your business. Those hours are a cost too, and belong in the comparison.

How do integrations affect the decision?

Integrations are often what really decides it. Orders flowing into accounting, invoices issued automatically, shipping labels printed and stock kept in sync make up the daily work of an online store.

On a platform, these are limited to the connectors the provider offers. If your accounting software is not on the list, or the connector does not do what you need, the work is done by hand. With custom software, each system is connected directly through an API, the interface two programs use to exchange data.

Payments work the same way. The store connects to a bank or payment provider, and the customer usually confirms the payment with 3D Secure. Payment gateway integration covers how that connection is built.

If you sell in Turkey, e-invoicing is a separate topic and requires working with a licensed integrator. We explain how it works in e-invoice integration in Turkey. For the current thresholds, check the Revenue Administration (GİB) announcements or ask your accountant. The scope of our connection work is on the integrations page.

How should you compare the cost?

Compare the total over several years, not a single year. On a platform, the subscription, app fees and any sales commission repeat every year. With custom software, the cost is concentrated at the start, followed by hosting and maintenance.

  1. Add up the yearly subscription, app fees and commission for the platform.
  2. Add the staff time spent on manual work.
  3. For custom software, write down the build cost plus yearly hosting and maintenance.
  4. Compare both totals over the same number of years.

Why does page speed matter in e-commerce?

Page speed matters because shoppers do not wait for a slow product page. They leave for another store. Most shopping happens on phones, so pages must load quickly even on a weak mobile connection.

Google assesses page experience with measures called Core Web Vitals: how fast the main content loads, how quickly the page responds to a tap and whether elements jump around while loading.

On a platform, speed is largely in the provider's hands, and each theme or app you add can make pages heavier. With custom software, only the code you need loads, and speed problems are fixed in the code itself. Whichever you choose, test the product and basket pages on a phone before launch.

Why does data ownership matter?

Data ownership matters because your customer list and order history are the most valuable assets of your business. Whichever system you choose, make sure you can export that data in full.

With custom software, the database is on your server and the code is yours. On a platform, the data can be exported, but the store itself cannot be moved. When you switch systems, the design and customisations have to be rebuilt.

Frequently asked questions

01

Can I start on a platform and move to custom software later?

Yes, and for many businesses it is the sensible path. Products, customers and orders are migrated, and old addresses are redirected to the new pages.

02

Who is responsible for security in custom e-commerce software?

The team that builds and maintains the software. Card details are usually processed on the payment provider's side and never reach your server.

03

Can the store connect to marketplaces?

Yes, through the API each marketplace offers. Products, stock and orders are mapped between the two. The scope depends on the marketplace's rules.

04

How long does custom e-commerce software take to build?

It depends on scope and usually takes longer than a company website. We write the exact date, together with the definition of done, on the first day.

05

Can you connect my platform store to my accounting software?

Often, yes. We check the API or export options of both the platform and the accounting software. If a connection is possible, we put its scope and timeline in the quote.

06

Is a hosted platform or custom software cheaper?

In the first year, a hosted platform is almost always cheaper. Over several years, subscriptions, app fees, commission and manual work can close the gap. Compare both over the same number of years.

07

How are payments connected in custom e-commerce software?

Through the API of a bank or payment provider, with payments usually confirmed by 3D Secure. Card data is processed on the provider's side. Which provider to use is your decision, based on fees and contract terms.

08

Can I take my data with me if I leave a platform?

Product, customer and order data can be exported on most platforms. The design, apps and customisations cannot, and are rebuilt in the new system. Check the export options before you start.
