Staging environment
A staging environment is a separate copy of your live site or software where changes are tested before they go live. If something breaks, your team sees it, not your customers.
What is a staging environment?
A staging environment is a copy of the live system used only for testing. The code is the same and the settings are close to live, but real customers never see it. New features and updates are tried here first and go live only when they work.
Here is an everyday case. Your online store's checkout page needs a change. If it goes straight to the live site and has a bug, customers shopping at that moment cannot pay. Tested on staging, the bug shows up there and gets fixed. The live site is never affected.
Why does it matter?
Staging reduces the chance that you or your customers run into errors. During a project it is also where you watch progress. Testing updates on staging before production is a basic rule of our maintenance and support service. How regular updates are handled is covered in website maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between staging and production?
Production is the live system real customers use. Staging is a copy of it for the team and you to test on. Changes are tried on staging first and go live only if they work.
Does a small site need a staging environment?
Not for editing text, which you do in the admin panel. It does for code, plugin or version updates, because one bad update can take even a small site down.
Should staging use real customer data?
No. Personal data is either kept out of staging or anonymised before it is copied. External services such as payments run on test accounts there.
