SaaS

SaaS is software you use over the internet without installing anything, paid for with a subscription. The provider handles servers, updates and backups. In return, you can change very little to fit your own workflow.

What is SaaS?

SaaS stands for Software as a Service. You do not install the software. You log in through a browser or an app and use it. You usually pay per user, monthly or yearly.

Here is an everyday case. Online accounting tools, email services and off-the-shelf CRMs are all SaaS. Hire five people tomorrow and you add five users, and the bill goes up. The provider runs the servers, updates and backups. You just use it.

Why does it matter?

SaaS gets you started fast, with no setup or development cost on day one. Check three things, though. The product is the same for everyone, so you cannot change parts that do not fit your workflow. Costs grow with the number of users. And you should know where your data lives and how you get it out if you leave.

We compare the options in off-the-shelf or custom CRM. If your workflow does not fit a ready product, see our custom software page.

Frequently asked questions

01

How is SaaS different from custom software?

You rent SaaS and use the same product as everyone else. Custom software is written for your workflow and the code is yours. SaaS starts faster. Custom software fits better.

02

What happens to my data if I leave a SaaS product?

That depends on the contract and the export tools. Before you subscribe, check in which format you can take your data out.

03

Do SaaS products have an API?

Most do, but the scope depends on the product and plan. If you plan to connect it to other systems, read the API documentation first.
